Cue Types: Media
These cue types play back content on audio or video outputs.
#Audio
Plays an audio file (WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC, AAC, etc.).
- Trim: drag the waveform handles to set an in-point and out-point. Click the waveform to set the in-point; ⇧-click to set the out-point.
- Bigger waveform: the window button in the TRIM header opens the waveform in a resizable window. Placing slice boundaries on the inspector's small strip is fiddly; the pop-out is the same editor at whatever size you drag it to, and the cue list, In/Out fields and the pop-out all stay in sync. The ? button beside it opens this page.
- Slices: ⌥-click the waveform to add a slice boundary, splitting the file into sections. Each section shows a play-count badge along the bottom: click it to cycle ×1 → ×2 → ×3 → ×4 → ∞. A section marked ∞ vamps (repeats) until a Devamp cue releases it, then playback continues into the next section: vamp on the verse, then continue, without splitting the file. Drag a boundary to move it; double-click a boundary to remove it. Slices replace the whole-file Loop setting while present.
- Slice and loop boundaries are gapless. Sections are queued onto the running player ahead of time, so a repeat or a move into the next section runs on without a break.
- Fade in / fade out: ramp the level at the start or end.
- Loop: repeat a set number of times or infinitely (set Loop Count to 0). Every repeat restarts at the trim in-point, so a trimmed intro stays trimmed.
- Clocks: a trimmed cue's ELAPSED and REMAINING count from its in-point, at its playback rate, and a sliced cue counts its sections cumulatively. Scrubbing honours rate and slices too.
- Rate: change playback speed (0.25× – 4.0×).
- Pitch: shift pitch in cents (±2400 cents = ±24 semitones), independent of rate.
- Effects: open the FX tab to add AudioUnit effects per cue.
- Routing: use the Routing tab to choose which audio outputs this cue feeds.
- Devamp: use a Devamp cue to gracefully end a looping Audio cue, or to release a vamping slice into the next section. The pass that is playing when you press GO is the last one — the audio is not interrupted at the moment you fire it. Fire the Devamp inside the last second of a pass and it ends on a short ramp at the boundary instead.
#Video
Plays a video file to one or more video outputs.
- Output routing: select which outputs in the Routing tab.
- Fade in / fade out: crossfade on play and stop.
- Trim: set in-point and out-point. The window button in the TRIM header opens the thumbnail strip in its own resizable window for precise trimming.
- Colour correction: brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, blur (Playback tab).
- Video Effects chain: stacked filters (vignette, sepia, posterize, etc.); FX tab.
- Corner-pin: warp the image to four draggable corner points (Playback tab).
- Embedded audio: the video's audio track routes through the audio output matrix.
#Image
Displays a still image (PNG, JPEG, TIFF, HEIC).
- Fade in / fade out dissolve.
- Hold duration: how long the image stays before auto-clearing (0 = hold forever).
- Stop on next GO: clear the image when the next cue fires. Works alongside a hold time : whichever happens first (the hold expiring or the next GO) clears the image.
- The same colour correction and Video Effects chain as Video cues applies.
- Blend mode: how the image composites over the content underneath it; Normal, Add, Screen, Multiply, Lighten, or Darken. Use Screen for glows/light leaks over video, Multiply for vignettes and frames, Add for particles. Fades ease every mode toward "no effect", so a fading Multiply overlay never dips the picture toward black. Blend modes render on live outputs; the virtual monitor previews Normal only.
- Multiple outputs: send the same image to several screens at once.
- Multiple image cues can display on the same output at once: e.g. a logo held in the top corner while other images (and videos) fire underneath. Firing another image cue no longer replaces the one on screen; each image holds and clears on its own Hold / Stop on next GO / Fade settings, or via a Stop or Fade cue that targets it. Use Cue Geometry to position each image in its own region.
- NDI / Syphon outputs: image cues can also be routed to the NDI and Syphon outputs, just like video cues. The still image is streamed continuously so receivers that connect after the cue fires still see it; it stops when the image clears.
#Text
Overlays styled text on top of any currently-playing video or image.
- Content, font size, text colour, background colour.
- Alignment: left, centre, right.
- Position: top, middle, bottom of the output. Top- and bottom-positioned text is automatically inset from the edge (~5% of the output height) so it clears a border or drape masking the top or bottom of an LED wall.
- Geometry: custom width, height, X/Y offset on the output.
- Timer mode: Off, Count up, or Count down; use {timer} in the content to embed a live clock. Count down needs a duration, set in H : M : S. Without {timer} the value appears on its own line. "Insert {timer} in text" adds the token to the end of the content for you; drag it wherever you want it from there. The token is case-insensitive and tolerates spaces inside the braces, so {Timer} and { timer } work too. It only substitutes while the timer is running, with the mode Off the text renders exactly as typed, so a token left behind would show literally on the output.
- Fade in / fade out.
- NDI / Syphon outputs: a text cue routed to an NDI or Syphon output is sent as a transparent still image. A running timer updates it about once a second, and a fade-out on those outputs clears the text at once.
- Text Hold (Playback tab): how long the text stays on screen after it fires, entered as MM:SS.s. A hold of 0 means hold until the next GO (shown as "∞ hold"); any value above 0 auto-releases the text after that time. "Stop on next GO" clears the text when any later cue fires: combine the two and whichever happens first (the hold expiring or the next GO) clears the text.
- Text fires as an overlay and doesn't interrupt a playing video/image cue.
- Multiple text cues can display on the same output at once: e.g. a title pinned to the top and a countdown in the middle. Firing a second text cue no longer clears the first; each holds and clears on its own Text Hold / Stop on next GO / Fade settings, or via a Stop or Fade cue that targets it.
#Camera
Shows a live camera feed on a video output.
- Device picker: choose any capture device connected to the Mac, or leave on System Default.
- Output routing, geometry, corner-pin, and fade in/out work the same as Video cues. With no output ticked the cue uses the first patched video output.
- Camera access: macOS asks the first time a camera cue fires. The cue editor shows the current permission state, with a button to grant it or to open Privacy & Security.
- Test Camera: opens the selected camera on its own and reports how many frames it delivered. Use it to tell a permission or device problem apart from a routing one, if the test passes but a cue still shows black, the cue's video output is the issue.
#Mic
Captures a live microphone or line input, or the sound of another app on this Mac, and routes it through the audio output matrix.
- Microphone access: the cue editor shows the current permission state, with a button to grant it or open Privacy & Security. Grant it here rather than waiting for the first fire: macOS only lists CueStudio 2 under Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone once the app has actually asked.
- Input picker: choose any audio input device, or pick from App audio (below).
- Gain: 0.0 – 2.0 (1.0 = unity).
- Routing: use the Routing tab to pick which outputs the input feeds.
- Monitoring: no separate switch: a Mic cue feeds the Booth Monitor output automatically whenever the booth has a device assigned.
- One input at a time: firing a Mic cue on a different input stops any running Mic cue on the old input, with a notice. Outputs switched off in Audio Outputs stay silent for mic audio (and for video-cue audio) as well.
#App audio (capture another app)
A Mic cue can take its input from another application, such as a browser, Zoom, or a music player, or from everything the Mac is playing. No virtual audio driver is needed.
- In the Mic cue's Input picker, under App audio, choose the app, or All system audio. Apps playing sound right now are marked ♪. Click Refresh inputs & apps if one is missing.
- Route the cue on the Routing tab like any other audio cue.
- Fire the cue. The first time, macOS asks for System Audio Recording permission.
- Permission: if the level stays flat while the app is playing, open Privacy & Security ▸ Screen & System Audio Recording and turn CueStudio 2 on under System Audio Recording Only. The cue editor has a button that opens that page.
- Mute the app's own output: when on, the app is silent on this Mac's own output for as long as the show is open, not just while the cue is live. You can keep pressing play in the app between cues and nothing comes out of the Mac. Its sound is heard only while the cue is live, through the cue's routing. Quitting CueStudio un-mutes the app. When off, the app plays both ways. For All system audio, the mute applies only while the cue is live.
- A disabled Mic cue does not hold its app muted.
- The app must be running when the cue fires. Open the app first, then fire the cue.
- All system audio never includes CueStudio's own sound, so there is no feedback loop.
- Safari: web page audio is played by a shared WebKit process, so capturing Safari also captures audio from other apps built on WebKit, such as Mail.
- The level meter falls to zero while the app is silent. This is normal.
#Noise
Generates pink noise, white noise, or a sine tone through the cue's output sends, for system tuning, speaker checks, and masking, with no media file needed.
- Signal: Pink noise, White noise, Sine tone (with an adjustable frequency in Hz), or My tuning track; loops the audio file chosen in Show Settings ▸ Audio ▸ My Tuning Track through the cue's outputs (until stopped, or for the cue's duration). The file is copied into the show bundle, so it travels with the show; a new show starts with none. With Output Walk on, the walk uses a generated signal and ignores the tuning track.
- Duration: run for a set number of seconds and complete (so follow chains continue), or 0 to run until stopped.
- The signal generates at -12 dBFS; the cue volume and per-send faders trim from there.
- Routing, fade in/out, fade curves, pause/resume, Stop and Fade cue targeting, and the booth monitor all behave exactly like an Audio cue.
- OUTPUT WALK: turn on Walk mode to step the signal through the output bank one output at a time; the same test as the Audio Outputs window's Output Test, but fireable from the cue list. Pick the start/end output numbers (end 0 = through the last output) and the hold time per output. The walk skips Booth and LTC and any output without a device; the follow chain continues when the last output finishes. Walk mode ignores the cue's routing sends.
#Playlist
Plays a sequence of audio files, one after another.
- Add files with the + button or by dragging.
- Shuffle and repeat options. The Playback tab's LOOP control also works on playlists: 0 = repeat the whole playlist forever, N = play the whole playlist N times.
- Crossfade: overlap consecutive tracks by N seconds.
- Inherits the Audio cue's looping, routing, and fade options.
